Announcement of KMS ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING
and tour of the new JOY ADAMSON EXHIBITION
Wednesday 23 APRIL 2014
from HONORARY SECRETARY, DR. MARLA STONE

You are kindly asked to attend the Annual General Meeting of the Kenya Museum Society Wednesday, 23 April, at 6:15 pm in the Louis Leakey Auditorium. Wine, juice and bitings will be provided from 5:00 pm. Park in the upper parking lot next to the Louis Leakey Auditorium.
There is a special opportunity for you at 5:30 in the Museum. KMS has worked with the Nairobi National Museum to revive what was a very popular anchor exhibition for the museum in the past, the Joy Adamson Exhibition. KMS has funded the project and worked hand in hand with the Exhibitions Department to develop a refreshingly new presentation of the colorful and intriguing illustrations by Adamson that capture and preserve the cultural and natural heritage of Kenya. Fifty pieces have been selected for the first year of the exhibition and another fifty will be substituted in the second year to keep the exhibition fresh. A sample of 6 of the peoples illiustrations have been selected for a post card set to be sold in the KMS Shop and other NMK museums.
Work is ongoing, but we want to give KMS members an opportunity to be the first to visit the exhibition in its nearly-finished stage. That opportunity will be just prior to the AGM, from 5:30-6:10. Please bring your KMS membership card for free entry to the Museum. The exhibition is on the second floor above the Hall of Kenya. At 6:10 sharp we will proceed to the Louis Leakey Auditorium for the AGM.
If you want to nominate officers or other Council members, you are encouraged to contact the KMS office by email or phone. Any member who wishes to submit a resolution at the Annual General Meeting must do so by sending it in writing to the Secretary, Dr. Marla Stone, via the KMS email (info@kenyamuseumsociety.org). Self nominations are welcome, but must be submitted in writing and seconded by another KMS member.
Please confirm your attendance on or before Wednesday, 16th April by email (info@kenyamuseumsociety.org) or phone (020 3743808, 0724 255299, or wireless 020 2339158).
If your membership has lapsed or will soon lapse you may renew prior to the beginning of the meeting. Though all categories of members are encouraged to attend, only paid-up members, exclusive of student members, visitor members, NMK special category members, and KMS staff, will be able to vote on any issues.

The agenda for the AGM will be as follows:
1. Opening of Meeting
2. Approval of Minutes of 2013 AGM
3. Chairperson’s Report
4. Treasurer’s Report
5. New Business

KMS Talk – NATURAL CULTURAL SITES IN KENYA by Dr. Celia Nyamweru

Nyamweru_Kit_Mikayi-2

NATURAL CULTURAL SITES IN KENYA
Saturday 29 March 2014
Louis Leakey Auditorium, Nairobi National Museum
Dear KMS Member,
Do you know what cultural or sacred sites are? Do you know where they are in Kenya? Do know their value and the challenges facing the kaya forests and other sites as Kenya’s?
All Kenya’s ethnic groups recognized ‘special places’ in their landscapes, places where the normal daily activities of farming, herding or hunting were forbidden or strictly controlled. Such places might be trees, forests, rock outcrops, hills or mountains, and they are often referred to as ‘natural sacred sites’ or ‘natural cultural sites’. Their meanings related to indigenous religions, or locations where ‘first settlement’ by the ancestors of a particular ethnic group occurred, or sites for particular community meetings and rituals.
After the imposition of colonial rule, many cultural sites were destroyed or degraded, but others have survived and are now the focus of conservation efforts by a wide range of stakeholders, from local community members to national and international NGOs and transnational organizations.
To find out the answers to these questions and how cultural forests, rocks and hills can survive in increasingly intensively developed landscapes, you are invited to this intriguing and captivating talk by Dr. Celia Nyamweru, who has been studying Kenya’s natural cultural sites for nearly 20 years, in particular the kaya forests of the Kenya coast.

THE STORY OF BEADS IN AFRICA by Rhodia Mann

2547-Bone-Round-Necklace-150x150

THE STORY OF BEADS IN AFRICA
Saturday 15 February 2014
Louis Leakey Auditorium, Nairobi National Museum

Do you know what a trade bead is? Do you know where they come from, how they are made and what they are worth? Do you know the origin of real amber and how to tell if it is the real thing?
To find out the answers to these questions and many more, you are invited to our fascinating and educative talk by Rhodia Mann.
Born in Kenya, Rhodia discovered her first glass beads on a Zanzibar beach at the age of 12. Thus began her life long passion. In 1973 she became a jewellery designer in New York and had numerous exhibitions of her work. Despite her success the pull to Kenya was strong and in 1981 she returned to the land of her birth.
Over almost 40 years Rhodia travelled widely in both Africa and Asia, in search of beads to make her one-off designs. She also spent a year with the Masai, funded by the Canadian government, collaborating on beaded clothing.
In 2005, she curated an exhibition on the history of beads at the Nairobi Museum. And in 2012 she published ‘Ushanga: The Story of Beads in Africa’ which will be available for sale after the presentation.
Rhodia’s talk represents 40 years of research and experience and includes illustrations from her book.
Please join us and learn about different types of beads, where they come from and how they are made. It will be worth it.
