Ol Donyo Sabuk
11-13 January, 2013
In search of cooler pastures we shall visit Ol Donyo Sabuk park in January. It is situated 85 km NE of Nairobi, off the Thika road. The mountain Ol Donyo, rising to 2,146 metres is not much to look at but it is the source of Yatta plateau, one of the longest lave flows on earth. It has dense forest and giant lobelias near the summit. Game is sparse though there is quite a lot of buffalo.
We shall stay at the ex warden’s charming, colonial style house. It has extensive grounds and is nicely furnished. Activities will include a walk to the summit, accompanied by an armed guard. From the summit there are beautiful views of Athi river, Mt Kenya and Kilimanjaro. Nearby, but outside the park, are the Fourteen Falls.
The mountain was part of the extensive ranch that belonged to Macmillan, an American settler. We shall visit his grave on the way to the summit and his house outside the park. A hunting lodge he maintained on his ranch is being revived and will make an excellent visit. There will be a 40 minute talk on his life in the evening.
