A Day Outing to ICIPE ( International Centre for Insect Physiology & Ecology)

ICIPE is an international scientific research institute, headquartered in Nairobi, that works towards improving lives and livelihoods of people in Africa. It was founded in 1970 by a renowned Kenyan entomologist, Thomas Odhiambo, with strong encouragement from Carl Djerassi, a professor of Chemistry at Stanford University.

The center’s main objective is; Research and development of alternative and environmentally friendly pest and vector management strategies, conservation and use of the rich insect biodiversity found in Africa among others. It is the only international center in sub-Saharan Africa working primarily on arthropods, while focusing on sustainable development using human health as the basis and the environment as the foundation for sustainability.

Activities:
Guided tours to;
• Beekeeping Museum
The museum showcases newly developed technologies of hiving stingless bees as well as the honey bees.
• Honey Quality Control Laboratory
In the quality control laboratory, extensive tests are carried out to test any impurities in honey including pesticides and antibiotics and to determine the quality of honey.
• Royal Jelly Laboratory
In this lab, royal jelly (a honey bee secretion that is used in the nutrition of larvae, as well as adult queens) which is harvested from the apiaries in the field is processed for consumption as a food supplement.
• Instrumental Insemination Laboratory
This lab undertakes instrumental insemination, which is a proven and reliable method of controlled mating, providing an essential tool for honey bee research, bee breeding and stock maintenance.
• Honey processing and Value addition laboratory
Processing of honey (honey bees and stingless bees)
Processing of beeswax to candles
• Silkworm harvesting

A Day Outing to Brown’s Cheese Factory

Activities will be:-
1. Private tasting session for the group
2. Discover flavour differences and cheese families with 8 cheeses including some seasonal cheeses kept just for group tastings.
3. A tour of the factory and overview of how cheese is made
4. Cows and chickens all to enjoy. Milking of cows possible for kids interested.
5. A short walk in the forest often inhabited by Colobus monkeys.
6. An extensive tour of the biodynamic vegetable garden
7. Buying a selection of cheeses to take home at factory prices
