By Prof. Peter Blaze Corcoran, Environmental Studies and Environmental Education, Florida Gulf Coast University, USA

Saturday 29 November 2014
Louis Leakey Auditorium, Nairobi National Museum

“As humankind pushes the planet past dangerous thresholds of temperature and carbon, life on earth as we have known it is being dramatically changed. The collapse of climate systems is altering ecosystems, agricultural systems, and social systems. The lecture will explore the urgency of the impacts of climate change on Africa. The theme will be the challenges of comprehending the impact of climate change on the beauty and bounty of Earth and what we in Kenya can do to empower our communities, faith institutions, schools, and families to respond.”

Day Outing to Dolly Craft Women Group – Kangemi
2 October 2014, 10.00 am

Dolly Craft was founded in 1989, with a main aim of creating jobs for the women of Kangemi slum, located a few kilometers from the city of Nairobi.

The Dimesse Sisters who run the projects entrusted by St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Parish, were challenged to start this project, after seeing the pain and struggles these women and their families were going through, as they visited.

The two main projects done by this group are;

1. Beadwork & Dolls making – done by 8 women
The women make dolls of different ethnic tribes in Kenya and the neighboring countries, in their national costumes, pop ups (small toys for children) inform of animals found in Kenya and ornaments used to hang on Christmas trees.

2. Sewing project, started in 1994 – it has 19 men and women
This group makes church vestments (used by Catholic and Anglican priests), African shirts, dresses, suits and bags.

Join us for this 2 hours visit and get to meet this amazing group of highly talented men and women, who work so hard to earn a decent living through their talents.
We will also have a tour of these two workshops, to see the designing, beading and sewing process.
