Christmas Safari to Malindi & Tana Delta
Christmas Safari – 24 December – I January
This will be an incredible 9 day safari, climaxing at the Tana Delta. It is an awesome place, still so unspoilt. All places we stay at are Italian-owned and that usually means good Italian food.
We shall visit Tsavo East and stay at a charming place on the Galana River just outside Sala Gate for 2 nights (1HB and 1FB). This includes special dinners for the festive season. We then continue to the awesome Tana Delta where we stay above the sand dunes for 3 days (FB). We shall also take a boat ride on the Tana and enjoy its incredible birdlife as well as crocodile and hippo. AThere is also a possibility to visit the Kipini Sanctuary with its numerous wetlands and wildlife.
Back in Malindi we stay at a beachfront hotel (B&B). There is a lot to do in and around Malindi, for example:
1. Visit the Vasco Da Gama monument and the old Swahili part of Malindi.
2. Good shopping in Malindi, good restaurants and good ice cream
3. Snorkling in Watamu Marine park
4. Walk among the mangroves in Mida Creek
5. The Dakatcha Woodlands and Hell’s Kitchen
6. A walk or drive in Arabuko Sokoke forest – a remnant of the once vast coastal forests
7. A walk among the dunes at the Sabaki River Delta. There should be a lot of migrant birds
8. Do nothing – just sit on the beach
Most of these activities will involve a small fee for a local guide.
Cost : 45,000ksh pp sharing
Please sign up by 15 November. You can pay later. I need to have some idea of numbers and put down a deposit on the lodges as there is a lot of Christmas pressure.

Kenyan Film – Butterfly People: The Samburu of Nothern Kenya
BUTTERFLY PEOPLE:THE SAMBURU OF NORTHERN KENYA
Saturday 16 November 2013
Louis Leakey Auditorium, Nairobi National Museum
Please join us at the Kenya Museum Society for a relaxing Saturday afternoon, watching Butterfly People, a short, spectacular and insightful documentary, about the Samburu of northern Kenya.
Synopsis
The Samburu people of northern Kenya have, for centuries, followed a pastoral life. Their culture evolved into an age-grade system, wherein rites of passage were marked by complex rituals and ceremonies. Within the system, the turning point for every Samburu is circumcision, its purpose being to create a new generation of warriors, traditional protectors of the tribe. Circumcisions take place rarely, their timing determined by the stars.
Set against a background of varied and magnificent scenery, the film, made by Rhodia Mann, who was adopted into a Samburu family, begins with Rhodia’s personal involvement with the family. Through the life story of her Samburu ‘mother’, she blends historical fact with folklore and mythology to give a history of the people, as far as it is known. The story takes us from the past into the present, and ultimately to the fascinating circumcision ceremonies of 2005.
Rhodia is also a bead specialist and author. Her books will be on sale at the event.

‘Using honey bees as a natural deterrent for crop-raiding elephants’ -Lecture by Dr. Lucy King

Dr. King, in collaboration with Oxford University and Disney’s Animal Kingdom, explores the natural world for solutions to human-elephant conflict, in a research project that uses in-depth knowledge and observation of elephant behaviour to reduce damage from crop-raiding elephants using African honey bees.
Lucy King was brought up in Africa and has an MSc in Biology and a PhD in Zoology from Oxford University.
“Her research underlines how working with, rather than against, nature can provide humanity with many of the solutions to the challenges countries and communities face.” Achim Steiner, executive director of UNEP.
Please come to what will be a fascinating talk by an excellent speaker.
