KMS ART SHOW 2016

Dear Artist,

The Kenya Museum Society (KMS) is again holding its Affordable Art Show, which has had increased success each of the last 3 years. Selected artwork will be exhibited and sold for the purpose of supporting the National Museums of Kenya (NMK). As before, the exhibition will showcase the diversity and richness of the creativity of Kenya’s artists with a range of experience.

The opening of the Art Show will take place in the Courtyard behind the Louis Leakey Auditorium on Friday evening, 28 October 2016. There is a Ksh 500 entry fee to the Friday opening to be paid by all, including artists. The show will continue on Saturday and Sunday, 29-30 October.  No entry fee is charged on Saturday and Sunday.

We are pleased to inform you that you are one of the artists invited to submit to this show by entering a maximum of two of your pieces. Please note that no third A5 pieces will be accepted this year.  The Art Show is open to painting, sculpture and mixed media work. Submissions will be juried. 3)  All paintings must be framed/stretched and ready for exhibiting, preferably with no

glass.  All fragile 3-dimensioanl pieces must be submitted in protective packagingPlease

note: KMS will not be responsible for fragile pieces of work.

4)  All submissions must be priced at no more than Ksh 99,999.  Artists must price their

     work reasonably and affordably.

Your work should be delivered to the former NMK Boardroom at the rear of the Courtyard on Wednesday, 19 October, strictly between 10am and 3pm.  Artists from outside Nairobi who send work by public transport must make sure that the work arrives no later than Monday, 17 October.

Unsold art must be picked up on Monday, 31 October, strictly between 10am and 3pm. Any art not collected by that date and time will become the property of KMS and will be used to raise further funds for NMK.

Please confirm your intent to participate as soon as possible to KMS’s email, info@kenyamuseumsociety.org, giving your name, phone and email contacts and stating the type of work you will submit (painting, sculpture or mixed media). Thank you.

ANNOUNCEMENT OF KMS ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING  WED, 20 APRIL 2016

FROM HONORARY SECRETARY, DR. MARLA STONE

CHANGE IN VENUE and ADDITION OF EXHIBITION OPENING

You are kindly asked to attend the Annual General Meeting of the Kenya Museum Society Wednesday, 20 April, at 6:15 pm at Ford Hall in the Nairobi Museum.  See the agenda below.  A new addition to the evenings’ proceedings is that the official opening of the new Joy Adamson Exhibition Phase 2 has been set to coincide with the AGM.  The opening will commence at 5:30 in the Nairobi National Museum.   Wine, juice and bitings will be served at the opening event.  At 6:15 members will move to the nearby Ford Hall for the AGM.  For those unable to arrive in time for the opening, Ford Hall can be accessed from the parking lot for the Louis Leakey Auditorium.

The Joy Adamson Exhibition is principally funded by KMS, accompanied by a Ksh 50,000 donation from GT Bank.  Because the NMK collection of Joy Adamson’s work is quite large, the second phase was created to display another 50 of Joy’s botanical, people and fish paintings and encourage return visits to the museum.  The KMS Shop will be open for purchases, including greeting cards with Joy’s work on them and books by and about Joy Adamson.

As previously announced, the date for nominations of officers or other Council members and the submission of resolutions closed on Wed, 6 April.

Geology Safari – “Field trip to the central Rift Valley”

A Geology Tour – Sleeping Warrior Camp

27-28 February, 2016

“We will see evidence of the various forces that have shaped these spectacular landscapes; tectonic and volcanic activity, the former existence of large freshwater lakes, and erosion by wind and water. Tectonic forces have formed the steep slopes called ‘fault scarps’ that define the rift valley and later created smaller faults in the valley floor. Volcanic activity has created lava flows and central volcanoes, ranging from the big ‘caldera volcanoes’ like Suswa and Longonot to younger, smaller cones including the cone cluster south of Lake Elmenteita. Cooler climates over the last million years allowed large freshwater lakes to form in the rift valley floor, which left thick deposits of the soft white rock diatomite, for example surrounding the Kariandusi prehistoric site. Erosion by running water has cut a network of gullies in the soft volcanic materials that form the outer slopes of Longonot and has picked out fault lines through several of the smaller volcanic cones. In our two day trip, we will begin to understand how these landscapes have evolved, and maybe get a sense of how they will continue to evolve in future millenia.
