Safari – The Tugen and Cherangani Hills, 25 – 28 June 2015

Mara trip photos by Lisa Phillips

The Tugen and Cherangani Hills

25 – 28 June (3 nights)

The hills and Kerio valley offer superb scenery. The Tugen range is heavily forested; the Cheranganis are heavily farmed except for the peaks, but both are spectacular. As the end of the rainy season approaches both ranges should be lush and green. The descent into Kerio valley offers breathtaking views. The whole area also has prolific birdlife.

We shall stay at the simple but very nice Sego Club. It has a small pool and a rooftop veranda with 360 degree views of the Tugen hills and the Elgeyo escarpment. We have our sundowners on the rooftop under a tree!

Programme

Thur – A stop in Nakuru to see Menangai crater, the second largest caldera on earth. Drive into the Tugen Hills, visit Kipsaraman museum. Picnic lunch. Dinner at Sego.

Fri – After breakfast pass through the Kimwarer mining area, explore the dramatic gorge at Chebloch. Picnic lunch at Chebloch. Continue to Rimoi  park. It has elephant and nearby is Lake Kamnarok. I have been assured the road into the park has improved. Dinner at Sego.

Sat – Drive into the beautiful Cherangani hills. Time  permitting members can walk up to the dreamy Torok waterfall (4km uphill). Yet another picnic lunch! Dinner at Sego.

Sun – Depart for Nairobi after breakfast. Short stop in Nakuru.

Cost : 10,600 ksh pp sharing. Single rooms available: supplement 1,000ksh pppd

Mpesa Paybill: 400800, Followed by Account No. 657 157 0019

Included – Half board at Sego.

Meru National Park – April 30 – May 3

DSC02605

Meru National Park
April 30 – May 3
Meru is one of Kenya’s most beautiful parks. Blessed with several rivers, it has diverse landscapes of riverine forests, swamps and doum palms. The southern boundry is formed by the majestic Tana river where the surrounding area is dry scrubland. Because of the low altitude the evenings are warm and the sky full of stars. Game in the park includes elephant, cheetah and a rhino sanctuary.
Meru is the area where the Adamsons released their most famous lioness Elsa back into the wild. We shall visit the graves of Pippa and Elsa, though the latter may be inaccessible. There will be a 40-minute talk on the Adamsons. We may also visit the Adamson bridge on the Tana river.
Route : We shall take a circular route round Mt Kenya. We go via Meru town . Nearby we shall visit a fossil site. Our coffee break will be at the Pig and Whistle, an old colonial watering hole. We return via Nanyuki.
We shall stay at the warden’s charming old house, with its spacious verandas. There is often game around the house. There is a swimming pool nearby which we can use…if we have time!
Because of the bed arrangement there have to be 4 couples. There are two single rooms. Total number the house can accommodate is 10 persons.
Cost : 14,800ksh.
Information : There is a lot written by the Adamsons as well as about them. Some of the books are available in the KMS library. Also recommended is an exhibition of Joy Adamson’s paintings on at the Nairobi Museum.
Book and pay now to avoid disappointment

A guided tour of the African Heritage House, Athi River

africanheritagehouseview

A guided tour of the African Heritage House, Athi River
By Alan Donovan
Saturday 28 March 2015

The African Heritage House was conceived by Alan Donovan based on the indigenous architectures he encountered from his many trips through Africa.
Overlooking the Nairobi National Park, this house is described by the prestigious Architectural Digest as “an architecture rising from the serene Kenyan plain like an outcropping of earth, a vision of usefulness informed by the African genius for decoration.”
The house, apart from housing an art collection spanning 50 years from all over Africa, is a piece of art itself, and remains of immeasurable cultural value to all Africans and indeed the whole human race.
PS: On 26 January 2015, African Heritage House was gazetted as a National Monument.
