The Owl Centre and Elsamere, Naivasha – Saturday 28 November 2015

Day Outing Image

This full day trip will explore two unique and fascinating places in Naivasha.
Our first stop will be at The Naivasha Owl Centre, started in 2003 with a little Barn Owl called Fulstop who was brought in with a badly damaged wing. This resulted in the owner, Sarah, building an owlery for Fulstop. From there injured or orphaned owls and then eagles and other raptors started to come in.
The centre has a small clinic and works with a veterinary surgeon and a falconer. The birds are treated for injuries and sicknesses or poisoning and are looked after until they fully recover. They are then released either back where they came from (provided it is deemed safe for them) or into the correct type of terrain for them, all under the watchful eye of the KWS.
The birds that are too badly injured or sick to be returned to the wild remain at the centre. In some cases they become teaching birds to help people, particularly children, to understand the importance of birds of prey and the vital role they play in this increasingly dangerous world. The other birds that can be released, but have a fellow injured partner are allowed to breed and their young are then released into the wild.
To culminate our tour, we will visit Elsamere, a nature lover’s paradise with a great variety of bird life, wildlife and splendid flora. This is also a former home of Joy and George Adamson, where history connects with the future as conservation is their main objective.

images

Origami is the Japanese word for paper folding. ORI means to fold and KAMI means paper. Together, they form the word, “origami.”
Origami involves the creation of paper forms usually entirely by folding. Animals, birds, fish, geometric shapes, puppets, toys and masks are among the models that even very young children can learn to make in just one sitting.
Did you know that when you practice origami, you are activating your whole brain? It has long been known that origami has many benefits like developing eye hand co-ordination, sequencing skills, attention skills, patience, temporal spatial skills, math reasoning etc.

Polish Drama Film, Ida – Saturday 26 September, Nairobi National Museum

Ida_(2013_film) 1

Ida – 2013 Polish Drama Film
Directed by Pawel Pawlikowski
Written by Pawlikowski and Rebecca Lenkiewicz

Saturday 26 September 2015, 4 pm
Louis Leakey Auditorium, Nairobi National Museum

Set in Poland in 1962, a young woman on the verge of taking vows as a Catholic nun. Orphaned as an infant during the German occupation of World War II, she must now meet her aunt. Her aunt, the former Communist state prosecutor and only surviving relative, tells her that her parents were Jewish. The two women embark on a road trip into the Polish countryside to learn the fate of their family.
Called a “compact masterpiece” and an “eerily beautiful road movie”, the film has also been said to “contain a cosmos of guilt, violence and pain”, even if certain historical events (German occupation of Poland, the Holocaust and Stalinism) remain unsaid.

Ida won the 2015 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, becoming the first Polish film to do so. Selected as Best Film of 2014 by the European Film Academy and as Best Film Not in the English Language of 2014 by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA).

Well-known Polish director and producer, Joanna Kos-Krauze, will introduce the film on behalf of the film’s director, giving some insights on filming techniques he used. Kos-Krauze will respond to questions after the film.

Kenya Bird Map half day workshop – Saturday 4 July 2015

DSC_0914

Kenya Bird Map half day workshop
By Washington Wachira – Project Manager

Saturday 4 July 2015, 8.00am
Louis Leakey Auditorium, Nairobi National Museum

The Kenya Bird Map (http://kenyabirdmap.adu.org.za) is an internet-based bird distribution database that employs citizen science to map the location of birds and describe their distribution in real time.

Bird distributions have changed over the intervening period, primarily because of habitat destruction and noticeable changes in long-term weather patterns, although it’s not known to what extent.

By pooling the efforts of many citizen scientists, the Kenya Bird Map will record the distributions of Kenya’s birds and in so doing, provide a powerful tool for conservation.

With data available for free, the atlas can be conveniently used by researchers, tourists, policy-makers, etc

Expected Impacts

• An early warning system for environmental change by tracking changes in bird distribution and relating them to environmental degradation, climate change, etc.

• Tracking of the timing and patterns of bird migration

• Monitoring population sizes and trends of threatened and endemic bird species

• Provide evidence of bird species’ abundances in Kenya

KBM may also encourage development of atlases for other taxa, such as reptiles, mammals, butterflies, etc.

ENTRY IS FREE

There are limited spaces, so please register by Thursday 2 July 2015
