Join Kenya Museum Society and The Traveling Telescope at Nairobi National Museum as we explore the night sky.We shall have a mobile planetarium, remote navigator and one of the largest telescope in Kenya.
The focus for the 25th November will be the Moon. It will be at ‘first quarter’, meaning it will be almost overhead at sunset and will set at midnight. During this phase of the Moon we’ll be able to see incredible details on the surface, including craters, mountains and some of NASA’s Apollo mission landing sites.

We will also use a powerful laser pointers to highlight different constellations, bright stars and other objects of interest in the sky. We call what we do ‘edutainment’, where we share our passion for observing the Cosmos in a fun yet informative way
Event is open for kids aged 3 years and above as well as adults.

the Little Five?

Come learn more about these important creatures during an interactive
session with Bernard Agwanda of the Mammalogy Department and
the KMS Childrens Committee. Bernard has studied these creatures in
the wild. He will share key facts about each of the animals, share
models and let us in behind the scenes. The program will also include
modelling and some pen and paper activities for reinforcement. The
program will end with a reading of The Small Five by Ralph Johnstone,
illustrated by Harriet Stines.

You are kindly asked to attend the Annual General Meeting of the Kenya Museum Society Wednesday, 3 May, at 6:15 pm at the Ford Hall. See the agenda below. Wine, juice and bitings will be provided from 6:00 pm.
Any member who wishes to nominate officers or other Council members is encouraged to contact the KMS office by email or phone. Self nominations are welcome, but they must be submitted in writing and seconded by the signature of another KMS full member.
Any member who wishes to submit a resolution at the Annual General Meeting must do so by sending it in writing, to the Honorary Secretary, Dr. Marla Stone, via the KMS email (info@kenyamuseumsociety.org).

Day Outing – Paleontology & Archaeology Sections of NMK

Behind the scenes visit to Paleontology & Archaeology Sections of the National Museums of Kenya
9.30 am – 11.30 pm

Palaeontology Section is under the Earth Sciences department, one of the core research departments of the National Museums of Kenya. Kenya’s human fossil record dates back to the last 6 million years, making Kenya undisputably the oldest record holder and truly the Cradle of Mankind. We will get a rare opportunity to view replicas of Lucy, Zinjanthropus and Australopithecus, fossils of extinct carnivores, insects and plants, among other fossils and we get an opportunity to learn some of the significant similarities and differences between chimps and humans.

Archaeology Section. The archaeological collections at NMK were, obtained through professional excavation and the donations of enthusiasts since the 1920s. They consist of stone and bone artefacts, shell, pottery, faunal material as well as rock art reproductions. These collections cover all the important periods of human technological local and social development, from 3.6 million to 300 years ago. Collections from the Early Stone Age include the oldest artefacts in the world and reproduction of the oldest human footprints left more than 1.5 million years ago from the Turkana Basin. We will have a demonstration on how our ancestors made and used the stone tools.
We shall visit these two departments, guided by palaeontologists and archaeologists for each section.

Children’s Day Outing – Karura Forest, Saturday 6 May 2017

Then KMS has organized a fabulous outing for kids (ages 7 to 11) to Karura Forest, the largest gazetted forest in Nairobi County. The forest is a green haven within the capital, filled with nature trails, a bamboo forest and a marshland home to a wide range of birdlife. The aim of the outing is to create environmental awareness for children from an early age.
