Human skin colour is an evolutionary adaption related to the intensity of sunlight on the earth’s surface. In the last 20 years, understanding of the trait has improved significantly, with great strides having been made in understanding the function of skin colour and its genetic basis, including the tremendous diversity of skin colours in Africa. Skin colour is relevant to human health. It has also been misused as a criterion for defining human races. When these facts are clearly understood and taught in all schools, we can all live healthier and happier lives.
